Why Stand By Me?
David Spurdle, a teacher from Hornchurch, visited Lebanon and saw some kids who needed help. He didn’t know how he was going to do it, but he committed to caring for 60 orphaned boys, so he founded the charity that became Stand By Me. Since then, the charity has rescued over 10,000 kids across 11 countries.
aims of the charity:
- Love, care and attention for every child.
- We rescue kids. Everything else is secondary.
- Build local. Invest in communities.
- Love and acceptance, regardless of belief.
Stand by Me establishes schools, homes and care centres at the centre of communities by identifying and building networks of trustworthy local people, motivated by the change they want to see in their communities. This allows them to respond to challenges in a quick and culturally appropriate way, giving unparalleled levels of child care wherever they work.
At present Stand by Me works in the Dominican Republic, Columbia, Romania, Ethiopia, India, Nepal and Burma.
Throughout the 2016/17 school year, Chepstow House children have been busy raising money so that we can build a new children’s home in Dembi Dollo, Ethiopia. Our aim is to raise £33,000. This new house will be a valuable asset where the children can be safe, receive love and access full time education.
“WHEN OUR CHILDREN KNOW THEY HAVE OUR LASTING SUPPORT, THEY CAN RISE ABOVE THEIR CIRCUMSTANCES, REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL AND GO ON TO DO GREAT THINGS. ONCE OUR CHILDREN ARE READY TO LEAVE OUR CARE, THEY OFTEN CHOOSE TO STAY IN THEIR TOWN, USING THEIR SKILLS AND TALENT TO TRANSFORM THEIR COMMUNITIES. BY PROVIDING THE RIGHT SUPPORT, WE ARE PROUDLY BRINGING UP THE NEXT GENERATION OF BUILDERS, NURSES, PLUMBERS, CHURCH LEADERS, DOCTORS, ENGINEERS, FARMERS, BUSINESS OWNERS AND TEACHERS IN THE AREAS WE WORK IN.”
