A Solid Foundation for Future Excellence
Our inspiring Reception curriculum prepares pupils for the next stage of their education while sparking a genuine interest in a range of themes and topics. Supported by skilled, passionate educators, children advance through a diverse syllabus that challenges them to excel in key areas of their development. Upon leaving Reception, they emerge confident, ambitious, independent, and armed with a varied skill set and a foundation for future accomplishment.

Literacy
Literacy
Our literacy programme equips students with the tools needed to establish connections between sounds and letters, and begin reading and writing. At Chepstow House, children enjoy access to a range of reading materials to ignite their interest at this early stage; these include books, poems and other written materials. They also learn cursive using the Kingston Style and follow a structured phonics programme using Jolly Phonics. For more information on Literacy please click here.

Maths
Mathematics
In Reception, mathematics helps children to develop and improve their proficiency in counting, using numbers, understanding and completing simple addition and subtraction problems, and describing shapes, spaces and measurements. We use Numicon to promote a multi-sensory approach to maths and provide children with a better understanding of numbers.

Language
Communication and Language
The aim of communication and language is to develop children’s confidence and ability in expressing themselves. Other important skills they learn include speaking and listening in a range of situations. Our students benefit from a rich language environment with many opportunities for improving these proficiencies.

Physical Development
Physical Development
Physical development is a core aspect of a child’s growth at this early stage. At Chepstow House, we provide many opportunities for young children to be active and interactive, and improve vital abilities like movement, control and coordination. Children also learn the importance of physical activity and how to make healthy choices regarding food.

PSHE
Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education
Personal, social and emotional development involves helping children to gain a positive sense of themselves and others. In addition to developing their social skills, children learn to build positive relationships, respect others, and have confidence in their own abilities; and how to manage their feelings and behave appropriately in groups.

Understanding the World
Understanding the World
Understanding the world involves guiding children with opportunities that help them make sense of the physical world and their community. Children enjoy various opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

Arts & Design
Expressive Arts and Design
Expressive arts and design provide children with valuable opportunities to explore and play with a range of media and materials. We encourage children to share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through various activities involving art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology.

Specialist Lessions
Specialist Lessons
Specialist lessons supplement the core EYFS curriculum and aim to further development in the above areas. Children receive lessons each week at Reception level, including in Art, French, Music and Physical Education. For further information, please see our Specialist Subjects.

Digital Literacy
Digital Literacy & Computing
Our digital literacy programme equips children with the tools to efficiently utilise a range of modern technologies, preparing them for success in an increasingly interconnected society. In computing lessons and across the curriculum, we focus on nurturing functional skills that help students use technology for both education and entertainment. In Reception, we teach learners how to programme bee-bots and computer software, understand everyday uses of technology, and store and manipulate digital content. We place considerable emphasis on the safety of our students; for this reason, our students learn to practise vital e-safety skills, like knowing when to take breaks from digital consumption and when to consume content using traditional methods.
