Gastronaut Live performed their “Utterly Revolting Science Show” to a packed gym full of spellbound KS2 children, who were taken on a fascinating trip though their digestive system, from their mouth through their gastrointestinal tract. This started with an investigation into the number of supertasters in the school. Food dye was placed on children’s tongues and the number of taste buds investigated under a microscope. The taste and explosive power of milk powder were ably demonstrated. The revolting food lab looked at edible insects such as locusts and the “fat bottomed ant.” Chemical reactions which produce heat were investigated though the “Elephant’s Toothpaste” demonstration. The science behind smells was shown using a vortex cannon. All in all, a memorable and inspiring glimpse into the science behind human digestion, that the children thoroughly enjoyed!
